If you hadn't noticed yet, we've had an upgrade around here! It was long overdue and necessary to really give us all that last push we needed to show you, the public, our supporters, our volunteers, and everyone that has been along for this ride, exactly what we're about.
There tends to be confusion about that difference between Kelly Mental Health and Kelly Mental Health Foundation - and that makes sense. They started very close together - about a year and a half difference, both started by me but for different reasons when I realized how running a private clinic could limit what I'd be able to do for our city, but running a separate non-profit, soon-to-be charity, meant we could do so much more.
But the names have been a problem. So, solution is to update the name, keep the acronym to hang onto our roots, but make it clear that wellness and well-being are the primary focus of what we do.
While working away at this at all hours of the night, the words kept repeating over and over in my head - "For each other, For Community." It got to the point that the words lost all meaning - I kept hearing it echo. But yet, it was powerful, and meaningful. I live in Thunder Bay. It's a city that has earned quite the reputation. And there is a seemingly endless need here for mental health resources and supports, for lifelong healing, and I want to be a part of that. I truly believe that collectively, we have the power to make this beautiful city something really spectacular. And we start that by helping one another, by stopping abuse and breaking cycles and creating such a sense of safety that people can finally begin to heal.
This organization is going to do some incredible work this year - and we're going to start by building up our network of private practitioners so we can form a hub - a place with all the knowledge about who is out there, what their expertise is, how quickly they can take a client in crisis, and where they keep their secret bat-phone so at least WE can get through to them when we need to. (For the record, I'm a fan of texting. I'll always answer a text).
In the meantime, thank you all so much for your support and goodwill as we figured out how to stand on our own feet and move forward. Lots to come this year!
